Mount Si crashes party, tops Woodinville 28-6
Mount Si won the first game at remodeled Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell, beating Woodinville in the nonleague football opener for both schools.
By Matt Massey - Special to The Seattle Times - 09.02.10

BOTHELL — It was as if the visiting Mount Si football team came in and put its feet up on the furniture of the new house. The Wildcats crashed Woodinville's plush, home stadium almost like they owned the place. The visitors attacked on defense, were opportunistic on offense and spoiled the first game at remodeled Pop Keeney Stadium with a 28-6 nonleague victory Thursday night.

Mount Si quarterback Ian Ilgenfritz directed the offense with efficiency, completing 8 of 12 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. (read article)

Mount Si wins football opener
By: Rhett Workman - Sno-Valley Sports - 09.03.10

We did not make the trip up, unfortunately, and we're sorry we didn't, because the way things appeared to go, it went very well. We'll let the Seattle Times tell the story.

But we have a comment, anyway, based on what they reported. Our thoughts are that if you are a Mount Si fan, you should be, and probably are, pleased with how things went. It appears the things we mentioned in our preview yesterday that would be keys were, and those were strong line play, and consistency and balance on offense, something which was shown in the scrimmage by both sides. Four different guys scored touchdowns, and the Wildcats forced a bunch of Falcon penalties, so it can be said that it was a good night at the office for the guys last night.

Bothell next week will be tougher - they have been one of the top 4A teams the last few years under ex-Mount Si assistant Tom Bainter - but the game is at Mount Si, and the Wildcats team will have gotten the rust off. Mount Si going forward looks to be very competitive and will give every opponent a battle.

Should be a good one next week. And we will be there, Twitter in hand, for this one, so look for our coverage of the game on Twitter. (read here)

KINGCO CROSSOVER 3A/4A FOOTBALL
MOUNT SI WILDCATS VS. WOODINVILLE FALCONS

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 - POP KEENEY STADIUM - 7:00 P.M. KICKOFF
By: Rhett Workman - 09.02.10 - Sno-Valley Sports Blog

Tonight is a big night in more ways than one. For both of the teams on the field, it's their first chance to see what they are truly made of this fall, but for the entire Northshore School District community, it's a very important moment in their local sports history, as tonight is the grand re-opening of their high school football stadium, shared by all three high schools in their district - Woodinville, Bothell and Inglemoor. Our colleagues at the Bothell Reporter, our sister newspaper, have more on that here.

And while the pomp and circumstance of the night will be historic for sure, the action on the field is what the fans came to see, and it is just like any other opening game of the football season - neither team really knows much about the other, and they themselves haven't had a chance to test themselves in game condition so there will be some nerves and some bugs to work out for sure. (read article with tonight's prediction)

An experienced Wildcat football team returns An experienced Wildcat football team returns
August 27, 2010 By Dan Catchpole - SnoValleyStar.com
NEW — 6:00 a.m. Aug. 27, 2010

Mount Si football players run sprints during a preseason practice. The Wildcats have a team full of veteran players returning to a league stacked with talent.

Under their pads and helmets, sweat ran down the players’ heads. It stung their eyes and tasted salty in their mouths. But they have tasted it before. They have run the sprints before. This team is not a novice one. It is one stocked with veteran starting players and understudies. Last year, the Wildcats had to replace 10 starting players. This year, only five starters are new. “Our experience is worth its weight in gold,” said head coach Charlie Kinnune, who returns for his 19th year as Wildcats coach after a 6-5 season last year that included a trip to the state playoffs. The returning seniors bring with them years of experience, including playoff games.

One of the new starters, quarterback Ian Ilgenfritz, even picked up playing time in the playoffs last year when he replaced Chris Clark. Alec Deichman will return as the team’s center. Helping anchor the offensive and defensive lines will be Kasey Channita, Josh Mitchell, Taylor Mitchell, Joe Farmer and Jarrett Adams. “Our offensive line — we’re nailed,” Kinnune said confidently. NEW FOR 2010 Season: Wildcat Football Academic Assistance Program
Parent and Student Volunteers Needed!

The Wildcat program prides itself on developing strong student-athletes that not only meet, but far exceed the academic requirements and expectations for participation.  With that in mind, we are now offering a two-part academic program that will ensure our players have the assistance and support they need to succeed both on the field and in the classroom. Students must pass all classes and maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to participate in athletics.  Player's grades are checked by coaches throughout the season.

The first part of the program is "Parent and Peer Tutoring", where we will assign a volunteer parent or student tutor to each player that wants or needs one throughout the season. If needed, we also have funding provided by the Booster Club for a professional tutor should we not have the needed subject expertise amongst our volunteers. Students (or parents on behalf of their students) that would like to take advantage of this program, and also parents or students that would like to volunteer as a tutor, should contact Sandy Chapman at 425-241-5108 or bobch@comcast.net.

The second part of the program is an optional "Team Study Hall" for all players, which will be held on Tuesday nights immediately following practice.  The Study Hall will be open until 8:30pm. This is an opportunity for players to get in some quality time to focus on their studies in a positive and supportive group environment. Players will also have access to onsite tutors should they need some help with their homework, writing papers, or preparing for exams. Since players are sure to need some sustenance after a long day of classes followed by a grueling practice, pizza or some other suitable kid-friendly meal will be provided by the Booster Club. The first Team Study Hall will be held on Tuesday, September 7th.

Our hope is to work proactively to ensure our player's get the year off to a strong start academically, and to prevent any academic issues from arising during the season. Go Wildcats!

Mount Si football content to fly under the radar
Posted by Mason Kelley - Seattle Times Sports Writer 08.26.10
When Charlie Kinnune looks at his 2010 roster, he sees what he describes as “kind of a classic Mount Si program.” The Wildcats come into the season with six returners on both sides of the ball in key positions. They are big up front with an offense that will be methodical, playing a style built around field position. Consider it old-fashioned football, a group built for playoff games in damp, cold conditions: Wildcat weather as Kinnune likes to call it.

Heading into last season, Mount Si was replacing 19 starters, but had one of the top receiving tandems in KingCo 3A/2A with Jordin Kinnune and Rossco Castagno. So, this season, the biggest question for the Wildcats is: Who is going to catch the ball? “We’re replacing 110 catches,” Kinnune said. “We think we’re finding some really good candidates who are going to take their place.”

The two top choices to replace last year’s duo are Kaleb Huerta, a 5-7 scat back, and sophomore Trent Riley, who is the younger brother of Tanner Riley, who will be a freshman basketball player at the University of Portland.

Quarterback Ian Ilgenfritz started three games for Mount Si as junior, including the final two games of the season. “He is our leader on offense and doing a great job right now,” Kinnune said.

Other key returners for the Wildcats include Joe Farmer (tight end, defensive end) and Matt Bankston (tailback and corner). When talking about Bankston, Kinnune compared him to Liberty’s Chandler Jenkins, the a quick running back, who can split out and catch passes. (continued here)
